Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has presented two special Platinum Jubilee Wealden Hero awards to two MAYFACS volunteers, for their outstanding contribution to the Mayfield and Five Ashes Community.
Nusrat visited the Support Hub last month to meet Ukrainian families and thank volunteers who have been coordinating local support. She returned last week to deliver donations of soap kindly provided by The English Soap Company based in Waldron, and to crown key volunteers Lucy Jervis and Freya Huxtable Wealden Heroes.
MAYFACS is a community charitable organization which stands for Mayfield & Five Ashes Community Services and offers a variety of activities and services. Lucy has taken over as the project manager of MAYFACS earlier this year, while Freya has been part of the team since before the pandemic.
Throughout Covid, MAYFACS volunteers provided a huge network of services to the whole community, and most recently, they set up The Support Hub for Ukrainian families arriving to Mayfield, providing support and a ‘Free Shop’ manned by volunteers, providing various donated items that families may need.
Nusrat Ghani said: “Volunteers are at the heart of community-led support across Wealden and the MAYFACS Support Hub is a fantastic, safe place for Ukrainian families to come to for all kinds of assistance. I am incredibly proud that Wealden is hosting the most families in any district of East Sussex, and we are lucky to have so many extraordinary individuals such as Lucy and Freya, who selflessly dedicate their time to supporting others. I am pleased to present them with this special Platinum Jubilee Wealden Hero Award to thank them and make sure that their huge contribution is recognised.”
