An MP has raised concerns regarding how the Wealden Council dealt with tax payment issue.
Due to a technical error, residents council tax and business rate payments were taken three days earlier than expected.
MP Nusrat Ghani criticised the councils lack of communication:
“Worryingly, the Liberal Democrat, Green Party, and Labour leaders who run Wealden District Council have failed to be transparent with councillors, local residents and indeed Members of Parliament.
"It is curious that the Liberal Democrat, Green Party and Labour councillors held no public meetings to share further information and provide residents with support.”
Wealden District Council were forced to apologise earlier this month over the error.
Councillor Rachel Millward said: “It is deeply upsetting to know that this error will have caused stress and difficulty for some residents over the Christmas period.
"On behalf of the council, I offer my sincere apologies to anyone impacted. We will do all we can to rectify this situation. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with our teams at [email protected]”
In a letter to Wealden District Council leaders, the MP shared her concerns:
“It is evident that the council, led by a coalition of three parties, is in chaos and is failing local residents, and I have grave concerns about the diminished level of accountability.”
Her letter also requests an urgent meeting with council leaders to discuss the issue and a plan of action to prevent this happening again.
