Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, is proud to award two community Heroes from local radio stations.
Christine Skinner is an invaluable member of the Uckfield FM team. Since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, the radio station has become an even more important hub for residents of Uckfield and the surrounding villages to get up to date information and Government advice. Christine has volunteered to daily source, collate and write a comprehensive guide which included all relevant information, which she then read out live on air from her home during the Breakfast Show. She provided updated information for the presenters to read throughout the day and is committed to carrying out this task for as long as necessary.
Stephen Dann volunteers as a presenter of various shows at Hailsham FM and has been going to the studio every day throughout the pandemic, to ensure that local residents could reach the team and share local updates. Stephen has been keeping people informed about the latest guidelines and advice on how to stay safe, as well as sharing information and spreading the details of local volunteer groups and support networks, such as the Hailsham Crisis Support. Stephen himself has picked up on requests for support from local residents and has devoted his free time to supporting the vulnerable in the community, by taking people to hospitals and medical appointments, and by delivering food to them.
Nus Ghani said: “Our community radio stations such as Uckfield FM and Hailsham FM are real lifelines to many constituents and I cannot thank them enough for all they have been doing during the Coronavirus pandemic. They are outstanding community assets run by local people for local people, and they have played a vital role during the crisis. The work and success of both radio stations depends on a fantastic team of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensuring that their listeners have the most up to date information and know whom to contact for support. Christine and Stephen are two exceptional volunteers and greatly valued by their teams and community. Many thanks for your efforts and dedication.
Uckfield FM Chairman Ian Smith said:
“Uckfield FM is rightly pleased and proud that Christine Skinner has received a Wealden Hero award from our MP, Nus Ghani. At a time when our listeners were desperate to be kept informed of how the virus is affecting our town, volunteer Christine gave up a lot of her time and pulled out all the stops to gather information to go out on air. Well done, Christine!”
She proudly accepted the award on behalf of both herself and the team at Uckfield FM, consisting of Mike Skinner, Tony Williams, Peter Suter and Jackie Rushton who collectively provided extensive information, interviews and updates as the coronavirus lock-down developed, for the people of Uckfield and surrounding villages.
