Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, has welcomed the announcement from East Sussex County Council that as part of a programme to make roads safer, the A267 and A272 are being prioritised for improvements.
Nusrat has recently convened a meeting with Sussex Police, local councillors and representatives from the A267 Road Safety Group to discuss traffic issues and incidents on the A267, and next steps in a coordinated action to reduce and prevent the number of collisions on this stretch of the road.
Following this meeting and an ongoing campaign, East Sussex County Council has announced that as part of its programme to reduce driver speeds, 16 roads across the county are being prioritised as sites that could benefit from speed limit reductions or measures to make the existing speed limit more effective.
The work includes new measures designed to improve compliance with the existing 30mph speed limits, which will be introduced on the A272 in Hadlow Down as well as two other locations.
Public consultations on the introduction of lower speed limits at 13 other locations across the county are due to begin in the New Year, including at the following sections of the A267:
- A267 Mayfield Road/Wellbrook Hill, Five Ashes
- A267 Mayfield Road/Heathfield Road (Cross in Hand)
- A267 Horam Road, Horam

Nusrat Ghani said: “I know that improving the safety of the A267 and preventing collisions is very important to local residents and I was pleased to meet with Sussex Police, local councillors and representatives from the A267 Road Safety Group to discuss what more can be done to help achieve this. I very much welcome the news that as part of work to reduce driver speeds, the East Sussex County Council will be launching a consultation on the introduction of lower speed limits in 13 new locations, including several sections of the A267. This is a great result for the campaign, and I would like to encourage local residents to share their views when the consultation opens in the new year.”
